EDINBURGH: University of Edinburgh is planning to celebrate Mahatma Gandhi's birthday as India day on campus.-------The announcement came as the university gave an honorary degree to former Indian president A P J Abdul Kalam in recognition of "his outstanding contribution to science and technology and his focus on transforming India into a developed nation by 2020"

EDINBURGH: University of Edinburgh is planning to celebrate Mahatma Gandhi's birthday as India day on campus.

University of Edinburgh boasts of alumni like Charles Darwin, Arthur Conan Doyle, Robert Louis Stevenson, Walter Scott, philosopher David Hume, physicist James Clerk Maxwell and inventor Graham Bell.

Sir Timothy O Shea, principal and vice chancellor, announced on Friday that October 2 - the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi - will be celebrated as the India Day in the campus from this year.

The announcement came as the university gave an honorary degree to former Indian president A P J Abdul Kalam in recognition of "his outstanding contribution to science and technology and his focus on transforming India into a developed nation by 2020".

George Palattiyil, deputy director of the newly formed Edinburgh India Institute said no other country in the campus of this illustrious university is celebrated with a special day dedicated to it.
